Heavy rains in Goa may damage paddy crop

Incessant rains lashing Goa has worried paddy farmers in the state as inundation in low lying areas may damage cultivation. The state has been witnessing heavy downpour since last week.
    
State Agriculture director Satish Tendulkar said that the rains should stop for a while so that farmers can continue with the transplant of paddy.

"Rains are good for paddy cultivation but heavy and continous rains are not," Tendulkar said. The state agriculture department has kept a close watch on damages that might be caused due to heavy rains in Goa.
    
He said that there are no complaints from farmers till now. The paddy cultivated on hilly terrains has remained unaffected due to rains. "If the areas remain flooded then farmers will face difficulties in transplanting and tilling activity," Dr H R Prabhudesai, a researcher with Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) told PTI.
    
He said that the situation would be favourable if there is a temporary dry spell allowing the farmers to continue with their activity.
    
Goa produces 110 lakh tones of paddy during rainy season with 32,000 hectare of area under cultivation.     

The statistics available from the agriculture department indicates that there 32,000 people involved in this activity.
