Markets Weekahead: Record high CA deficit may weaken stocks

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 31 Maret 2013 | 23.55

Broader sentiment is expected to be weak in Indian stocks after data showed the current account deficit widened to a record high 6.7 percent of GDP in the October-December quarter.

However, the data, coming out after market hours on Thursday, also showed the balance of payments turned positive.

Still, traders say macro-economic indicators may have bottomed out and point to signs of recovery ahead.

Analysts also feel the recent correction in shares have made valuations more compelling.

Motor insurance premium hike too low to cover losses

The general insurance industry today termed the decision of the sectoral regulator to increase the motor insurance premium as a step in right direction, but too low to cover losses in this segment.

"If you see the exposure draft, there was a proposal to increase premium at a higher rate. Even if done at the proposed level, it was inadequate. So, the current rise is too inadequate to cover the losses in this space on the back of rising accidents and claims," General Insurance Council Secretary General R Chandrasekaran told PTI. He also said things would not be much different as far as underwriting losses are concerned in the next financial year despite the rise in the premium.

Also read: Is IRDA's new insurance policy guideline helpful?

The insurance regulator, IRDA has increased the motor premium rates by an average of 20 per cent effective next April 1. However, these rates are way below the hike proposed in the exposure draft floated in February. Chandrasekaran, however, said the council would continue its representation to both the regulator as well as the government for increase of premium in this segment. Bharti Axa General Insurance too said the hike is a step in the right direction. "The increased rates are a step in the right direction from the point of view of the insurance industry as this is a loss-making proposition currently....However, de-tariffing motor third-party premium would help the customers more as in this case good customers would enjoy lower premium as opposed to the current scenario wherein good customers are subsidising the bad customers," Bharti Axa General Insurance MD and CEO Amarnath Ananthanarayanan said.

Another official from a large public sector GI said the company would soon pass on the new premium rates to the customers. "Whatever the rise that will be passed on to consumers. There is no case for absorbing any part of the rise as this is a loss-making segment," the official said who wished to remain unidentified. Many of the general insurance industry players are making losses due to high underwriting losses in the motor insurance segment as premium paid are inadequate in comparison to the claims.

Indefinite curfew in Assam silk town Sualkuchi

Indefinite curfew was clamped after silk weavers observing a 12-hour bandh today defied prohibitory orders in this town in Kamrup (Rural) district protesting the use of artificial silk, official sources said. The police fired rubber bullets after a lathi-charge and teargas failed to quell the weavers who ransacked shops selling silk clothes and made bonfires of these on the road, they said. One person received injuries in the firing, they said.

The weavers, who converged on the main market in the morning, also demanded that the State Bank of India branch down its shutters, the sources said. The weavers alleged that artificial silk brought from other parts of the country for making the traditional Assamese attire was affecting them and the silk industry in the state. They also alleged that the silk clothes the shops were selling were not pure Assamese golden Muga Silk and white Paat Silk as the clothes burnt turned to ash unlike pure silk. The trouble began yesterday when the weavers set ablaze silk clothes, clashed with shopkeepers and threw stones at the police when they intervened injuring five of them. The local people, who reared silk worms and were employed in the weaving industry, have been on the warpath for some time against the use of artificial silk from outside by traders for preparing traditional attires as it was cheap and had a better finish than the local silk varieties. They claimed that local weavers, who used looms for weaving, were unemployed because of the machine-made products while silkworm rearing had become extinct due to the lack of market for the expensive silk. They also accused that the state government had assured to give Rs 100 crore for the survival of the Assam Paat and Muga silk industry facing stiff competition from artificial silk, but the funds were yet to be released.

Euro zone savings deposits are safe, says German minister

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has said savings accounts in the euro zone are safe, adding that Cyprus is a "special case" and not a template for future rescues.

In an interview with Bild newspaper published on Saturday, Schaeuble distanced himself from comments on Monday by Eurogroup chairman Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who said the rescue programme agreed for Cyprus - the first to impose a levy on bank deposits - would serve as a model for future crises.

"Cyprus is and will remain a special one-off case," Schaeuble said.

"The savings accounts in Europe are safe."

Schaeuble said the problem in Cyprus was that two large banks in Cyprus were in effect no longer solvent and the Cyprus government did not have enough money to guarantee savings.

"That's why the other euro zone countries had to help," he said. "Together in the Eurogroup we decided to have the owners and creditors take part in the costs of the rescue - in other words those who helped cause the crisis."

Schaeuble said he was confident Cyprus would be able to completely pay back the help. "Cyprus's economy will now go through a long and painful period of adjustment. But then it will pay back the loan when it is on a solid economic foundation."

Schaeuble said the euro was stronger today than at any time since 2010.

"Yes, you could see that during the Cyprus crisis," he said. "The entire turbulence did not have any impact on the other countries in Southern Europe."

He said it was different in early 2012, when elections in Greece caused interest rates across Southern Europe to rise.

"The financial markets have seen: we are better prepared now. We've accomplished quite a bit," Schaeuble said.

He said he was against thinking about individual countries leaving the euro zone. "What is more important is that we are strong enough to keep everyone in the boat," he said.

"I believe that we will one day read in the history books about this period that the crisis brought Europe even closer together," he said, adding the continent was currently enjoying "a very fortunate era".

How impact investing could affect biz in India

The Rockefeller Foundation reports that impact investing is set to grow at an annual pace of 30 percent. India is the second-largest market for impact investing after the US, with USD 500 million worth of investments made in 2012 alone. But what does this mean?

When Pierre Omidyar saw his networth cross a billion dollars in 1998 as Ebay listed on the capital markets, he knew he had to do more with his wealth that had come to him in just three years. So, he set up the Omidyar Network, an organisation that invests in promising social enterprises.

Today, the Omidyar Network, sponsored by Pam and Pierre Omidyar has put in over USD 550 million in impact investments. The network operates with two cheque books, investing roughly half its corpus as grants to non-profit organisations, while the other half goes to early-stage social entrepreneurs whose businesses are perceived too risky by commercial investors. Omidyar set up shop in India in 2010 and has a portfolio of 27 organisations in which it has invested about USD 100 million. 70 percent of these are for-profit ventures.

Venture philanthropy, impact investing and flexible capitalism. These are some of the terms that have been used to describe the approach that Jayant Sinha, partner, Omidyar Network India Advisors and his team have taken to capital investments in the social sector. But Jayant likes to keep it simple. He believes social impact and financial returns are a means to an end. Jayant uses examples of two of his investee companies to explain how they operate - D Light, a solar lantern manufacturer and Tree House, India's largest self operated pre-school chain.

Sinha says, "The social impact cannot be an add-on it has got to be built into the value proposition. So, Tree House tracks the number of children that are in their preschools. That is an impact metric because we know if the child is in one of the Tree House preschools, he or she is going to get tremendous education and in doing so achieve social impact.

Similarly for D Light. D Light makes solar lanterns. So, for every solar lantern they ship, they are actually substituting kerosene lanterns. They are reducing the cost of using kerosene, providing a much healthier alternative, and reducing the risk of fire. So, built into that solar lantern is already that social impact. You track solar lanterns, you are tracking social impact.

For someone who didn't know what LP (not sure) stood for in 2001 to managing four funds worth over  Rs 800 crore Vineet Rai, founder and CEO, Aavishkaar has come a long way on a very challenging road. One really must put this in context at a time when regular venture capitalists (VCs) were reluctant to make investments in purely commercial ventures in urban India, Vineet's mission is to create a fund to service enterprise in India's most rural areas.

Vineet survived the rough and tumble of impact investing because of his ability to take disproportionate risks and the capacity to be extremely patient, the virtue of which he learnt when he first began working for a Gujarat government-backed rural enterprise incubator in 1998.

Rai says, "My job was to go to the villages and help the innovators into converting their innovations into products and then into businesses. One of the key learnings I gained in that process is converting an innovation into a product, and a business requires an entrepreneur not an innovator as the lead. The entrepreneur is taking the risk and he requires risk capital in trying to build that business. The biggest challenge was not in finding the entrepreneur or helping the innovation to become a product, but providing that risk capital. That was my key learning out of the three, three and a half years I spent as incubator.

Aavishkaar is not very different. We are a venture capital fund. The only difference is that we are focused on rural India. We have made 38-39 investments till date. We are the first investor in almost 38 of them. So, 98 percent of the time we are the first investor. Almost 50 percent of the companies that we have invested in actually didn't exist, that means they started with our capital. More than 50 percent of our capital is deployed in the low-income stage. So, that could tell you that our capacity or appetite to go and take risks where returns are actually unexpected is very high.

Buy Tech Mahindra with long-term view: Nirmal Bang

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 24 Maret 2013 | 23.55

Incorporated in 1986 as a joint venture (JV) between Mahindra and Mahindra and British Telecom (BT), Tech Mahindra (TechM) is India's leading software company providing solutions primarily to the telecom industry.

BT initially held a 42.4% stake in TechM, but it had been consistently reducing its stake and finally it exited from the JV by selling its remaining stake of 9% for Rs 1,000 crore in December '12. However, BT continues to be its top client contributing around 30% of its revenues.

The company's services include Business and Operations Support Systems (BSS/OSS), System Integration (SI), Engineering, Mobility and Remote Infrastructure services, among others. Back in 2009, TechM expanded its IT portfolio by acquiring Satyam Computers for Rs 2,889 crore and the company is in the merger process. TechM has over 50,000 employees. Post merger with Mahindra Satyam (MSAT), TechM would be the fifth largest IT company in India.

Investment Rationale

Tech Mahindra: Mahindra Satyam Merger - A De-risking Model

TechM acquired 51% in Mahindra Satyam (MSAT) in 2009 for Rs 2,889 crore. The combined revenues of TechM and MSAT would be over USD 2.5 billion and would enable the company to chase larger deals and improve traction for the merged entity.

Primarily for TechM, the merger would dilute its concentration towards the telecom industry, de-risk the top client contribution (BT's contribution to total revenues in the combined entity would come down significantly to 17% to 18% from current 29%) and have a well-balanced geographic distribution.

For MSAT, this move will help address its concerns like client and employee retention, legal disputes, profitability and the management can focus fully on its growth drivers.

Moreover, Satyam has considerable exposure to different verticals like BFSI, manufacturing, retail but not telecom, while close to 96% of Tech Mahindra's revenues come from telecom. So, the strengths (verticals and services) of both these companies will complement each other.

Post merger, the combined entity is said to become India's fifth largest IT company. However, on P/E basis, TechM is trading at lower valuations as compared to its peers. We believe TechM would command better valuations once the synergies of MSAT merger starts reflecting on the company's financials.

Risks

Delay In Merger:

The positives flowing in to the company from the combined entity will be further delayed if the merger does not take place as soon as anticipated.

Currency Fluctuations:

Any drastic variation on the currency front would adversely affect the company's revenues, margins as well as profitability.

Conclusion

TechM's merger synergies with MSAT are not limited to just de-risking the revenue profile. It will drive better revenue growth through cross selling of services; higher scale (USD 2.7 billion combined revenue in FY13) will allow the company to bid for larger deals. Additionally, strong deal wins, right acquisitions and reduced concentration on BT will help the combined entity to offer the much needed momentum to revenue growth. The stock is trading at a PE of 11x its FY13E earnings of Rs 99.4. Investors can look at buying the stock with a long-term perspective.

I am more mature, happy and philosophical now: Kareena

Kareena Kapoor is a power packed combination in the Hindi film industry. A top star who is also one of the most gifted actors of her generation. While she has had her share of critical acclaim in films like Omkara and Chameli, her definitive performance was in 2007 hit, Jab We Met. Post that, Kareena's career has been a mix of the occasional blockbuster like Bodyguard and roles like Heroine and Ek Main Aur Ek Tu.

Last year in October, she married film star Saif Ali Khan, making it one of the most high profile marriages in Bollywood. Below is the edited transcript of Kareena's interview to The A List.

Q: You have lost weight again, you are back to size zero. What's going on?

A: I am shooting a movie with Imran Khan in Bangalore and he is quite tiny. I tell him all the time that he needs to put on some muscle and bulk up like all the older heroes. However, I think that is his charm, so I have to be on my toes all the time. I was on a holiday in Switzerland and now I am back to work and back to life, which is a boring routine of work and yoga.

Q: I had met you much before the release of Refugee. I had come to the sets where Karisma was shooting a film and I had come to ask her for an interview and looking at you I thought this is a person who has the aura of being a star, this is a person who is going to be a star, enjoys being a star and is totally unabashed about being a star.

A: My personality speaks that, but in my mind I have never been a star. Those people who know me know that personally, I am a girl who is so basic that it could get slightly boring. I am a fun girl but I am so basic with the way I eat, the kind of clothes I wear at home, it is the most basic. I think it is my look that people mistake for the fact that she looks like a star and she loves being it. However, I love acting, I love being an actor and in that I am very energetic and I love being on screen.

Q: I remember I had met you about four-five years back and you had said that it does not matter if you do not see your face in Bombay Times one day. So, how do you keep grounded? Is it because you are from a film family and therefore you know that these things can be very transient?

A: Ofcourse. That is definitely the case, but I have also matured over the years. I have come to terms with so many things in life, positive or negative. I have understood that being a star does not just mean doing glamorous roles, having perfectly blow-dried hair and going to events. There is a lot that you have to deal with to actually be like a big star.

Every night I thank my lord for whatever I have got but I also know that I have done it all by myself. And irrespective of whether it they are wrong decisions or right decisions, they are all mine. So, at the end of the day, I do not have anyone to blame but myself and that is a good feeling to have and that keeps you grounded.

Over the years I feel I have matured. I have become more stable, happy and a little philosophical of course. A lot has to do with my profession and life but a lot has to do with definitely meeting Saif and understanding that there's a lot more to life than just the movie business.

Q: He is one of the few actors who have a perspective on things outside the industry. I know the few times I have met him, it's not just the industry and it's not just the industry gossip.

A: He does not know any industry gossip. If he has to meet a particular actor or an actress at a party, he might say 'Hello' but then he looks at me and his next question is, 'who is that? He does not know anyone in today's time.

We do not watch too many movies at home. In the last five years, that is what changed me because I think he has given me and opened an entire door full of goodies, which has so many things in it. It has books, travel, politics and all different kind of takes. He has a take on everything and he is worldly wise.

IOC to raise diesel prices from Saturday

Indian Oil Corp , the country's biggest refiner, will raise diesel prices by about 1 percent from Saturday in line with the flexibility given by the government, it said in a statement.

The three state-run fuel retailers - IOC, Bharat Petroleum Corp and Hindustan Petroleum Corp - tend to move their prices together.

Government in January allowed fuel retailers to raise the price of subsidised diesel by 1 US cent a litre every month and asked bulk buyers to pay market rates.

It deregulated gasoline prices in June 2010. In Delhi, diesel will cost 48.67 rupees per litre as charged by IOC from Saturday.

A decade ago Internet connectivity may have been considered a luxury, but the world's outlook on what I like to describe as the repository of collective human consciousness has changed radically. It's been several years since France has made access to Internet a human right. Finland has gone a step further and mandated access to a minimum of 1Mbps Internet connection a legal right to its population of five million. The minimum required bandwidth is proposed to be bumped up to 100Mbps by 2015.This makes one wonder how long will it take for India to implement the same for its 1.2 billion-odd population. Not anytime soon because roughly some 600 million Indians do not have access to electricity, let alone Internet access. Almost all of this underprivileged populace, however, resides in far-flung villages and towns. The metros and tier-2 towns, on the other hand, have a considerably better Internet penetration, and this is where most of our estimated 121 million strong Internet users are based out of.

Imports of rough diamonds seen jumping 25 percent in FY14

India's imports of rough diamonds are likely to jump by a quarter in the next fiscal year from USD 14.5 billion now, as exports of the processed gems to top consumers increase and Indian exporters enter newer markets.

India, the world's largest processor of rough diamonds, gets most of its supply from firms such as top producer De Beers Gold eyes biggest weekly gain in months on Cyprus woes

"We will go to newer markets to beat the slowdown, for example, the countries of the former Soviet Union are buying in huge quantities from India," said Pankaj Kumar Parekh, vice chairman of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, which represents more than 5,500 of the country's exporters.

The trade body expects India's exports of cut and polished diamonds in the fiscal year to March 2014 to be 25 percent higher than current estimates of USD 16 billion, equivalent to 66 percent of total gems and jewellery exports.

It expects exports of gems and jewellery to rise 6.6 percent to USD 50 billion. Exports of gems and jewellery - which include diamonds - constitute 14 percent of India's total trade, and employ 3.4 million workers, with the Middle East taking most of India's gems and jewellery shipments.

Demand from the euro zone could be depressed because of the region's debt crisis, though he bet on a revival in demand from the United States.

"Things are in the doldrums in the European Union, and the buoyancy is visible in India and China," said Parekh.

India processes about 92 percent of the world's diamonds, followed by Belgium, Israel and China. Most of the diamonds are sourced from world miners through Dubai.

World diamond production has been steady at 120 million to 130 million carats or roughly about USD 15 billion in value terms, putting an upward pressure on prices, the Council said. Miners are unlikely to ramp up production without a massive improvement in the world economy, it added.

Robust Silver

Exports of silver jewellery are likely to grow at a robust pace next year, as growing numbers of buyers opt for the cheaper metal in the facing of rising gold prices.

"Middle class consumers are finding gold expensive, and the metal is being replaced by silver," said council official Sabyasachi Ray.

A 10-gram quantity of silver is valued at 547.8 rupees, against 29,766 rupees for a similar quantity of gold.

Exports of silver jewellery rose to USD 715 million in the 11 months to February, an annual increase of 10 percent, compared with flat exports of USD 18.12 billion of gold jewellery, data from the trade body showed.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan is all set to appear in person before a Sessions Court here in the 2002 hit-and-run case on March 25. He would return from the USA tonight and appear before the Court on Monday, sources close to the superstar told media.

The case would come up for the first time before the Sessions Court after a Magistrate transferred the matter to that Court by charging the actor with a more serious charge of 'culpable homicide not amounting to murder'. Along with the prosecution's case against Salman, the court would also hear his appeal against the Magistrate's order, invoking the charge of 'culpable homicide not amounting to murder' against him which attracts a punishment upto ten years in prison.

Sessions Judge U B Hejib has scheduled the hearing for March 25, and the 47-year-old had been asked to be present on that day, the sources said. It would be Salman's first appearance before the Sessions court after Bandra Magistrate's court referred the case to the Sessions Court (because the offence he is now charged with is serious).

Earlier, the Magistrate had asked Salman to appear before the Sessions court on March 11, but he did not go to the court that day as the case was yet to be assigned to any judge. Sources said as there would be a fresh trial, evidence produced before the Magistrate's court would not be considered and prosecution may have to adduce evidence afresh. One person was killed and four injured when a Land Cruiser, allegedly driven by Salman, ran over people sleeping on pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra in the wee hours of September 28, 2002.

Kejriwal to begin indefinite hunger strike in Delhi today

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal will begin his indefinite hunger strike from Saturday. Kejriwal intends to launch a "civil disobedience movement", asking Delhi residents not to pay their "illegal" electricity and water bills.

Unlike his previous fasts, this one will not be held at Jantar Mantar or Ramlila Maidan, but at a party volunteer's home. On the eve of his indefinite fast, Kejriwal promised that any legal action against those who follow his lead and not pay bills would be revoked once his Aam Aadmi Party comes to power in the city.

He also attacked the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party saying its agitation against the hike in power and water tariff was just an election gimmick and it was hand-in-glove with the Congress. "People are forced to pay their bills through their nose due to fear of legal action against them. To instill confidence in them, I would be on indefinite fast from tomorrow," Kejriwal told reporters.

"The aim of my fast, which will begin from a house in Sunder Nagari, is to rally more and more people against the illegal bills," he added. Kejriwal appealed to people not to pay the bills and said if more and more won't pay and join the "civil disobedience movement", government and the discoms won't take against against them.

"Even if some people face legal action, then they must not panic as all the legal cases would be withdrawn after his party comes to power in Assembly election in November," he said. When asked if he was provoking people to break the law, he said Mahatma Gandhi had himself said that one should not obey the law if it's against people and be prepared to face its consequences.

Targeting the BJP, the activist-turned- politician said, "BJP had the copy of the order of former Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) chairman to reduce the tariff since 2010, but they were sitting on it and when the election is nearing they are protecting against the hike. They had not raised the issue in the Delhi Assembly.... Now Dikshit government wants to give a bailout package of Rs 20,000 crore to the discoms," he added.

He claimed that poor people had to take loan to pay their electricity and water bills. Elaborating about the course of action, Kejriwal said apart from him, party volunteers would be observing fast in 264 Wards of the city. Apart from it, the volunteers would collect signed letter in favour of Arvind Kejriwal.

Cheap, high power smartphone is next tech Big Bang: Google

Eric Schmidt, executive chairman, Google believes that the next revolution will be caused by cheap and high-power smartphones and laptops.

Schmidt spoke to CNBC-TV18 at an event in New Delhi where Indian and international experts came together to brainstorm about what the Internet has meant for India and the significant opportunities it offers.

Also Read: BlackBerry CEO says Android and Windows Phone are not mobile computing platforms

Below is an edited transcript of the show on CNBC-TV18

Q: Over the last decade, you built Google from a start-up to one of the most admired companies of all time. What is your verdict on your last 10 years at Google?

A: I could not be happier with what Google has achieved. It is a source of pride for me personally and for people at Google in general. The power of information is so dramatic and you really do touch people's lives when you give them the answers to the things they care about. I cannot think of a better way to spend a decade.

Q: What would you say your biggest failures have been?

A: We made money but we also had to make some trade-offs. Probably the biggest mistake that I made was not in seeing the social media revolution early on. I think we have realised it now but I would take responsibility for that mistake.

Q: Will that in the future affect search as well which is your biggest source of revenue? Will companies like Facebook and Amazon be able to map users better to offer enhanced services while you remain a passive search engine?

A: I would disagree that we are going to remain a passive search engine. We have a product called Google Plus which is doing extraordinarily well.

Q: But as compared to Facebook?

A: Facebook has been around longer than Google Plus. The Google Plus link graph which tracks the sort of people that you interact with is an important future signal on our search ranking. So I think we will be fine. I am not worried about it. I think it is just important that Google be a participant in all of the important Internet technologies.

Q: What and from where is the threat to the Gang of Four- Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple- going to come from?

A: The Gang of Four is in reference to the presence of four network-scalable platforms in the industry that are driving huge shareholder value and impact on partners and the competition. The threats to each of them are many. In Apple's case, the threat is from the Android.

Amazon faces the threat of increased forays into the e-commerce space. Facebook has a a competitor in Google Plus and Google faces competition from Microsoft. So it is key for each of these companies to maintain or increase the rate at which they can continue to innovate to solve problems that really matter to the end-user.

The industry that was largely driven by the Microsoft monopoly structure and PC hardware manufacturers has been completely broken down now by the emergence of tablets and smartphones offering many different choices.

Q: Who do you see as the Google of today? Where Google was when search started? Which companies do you give the best chance of coming in and knocking you off?

A: I certainly hope it is Google. A new competitor to Google is unlikely to be a direct rival to our core business, but rather likely to compete from the side such as solving a problem in a new way, a way that we missed. We worry about that because that's typically how incumbents compete and all leading companies face that competition.

Apple makes renewable energy push with solar, fuel cells

Apple Inc now runs its largest US data centre entirely on renewable energy, with a majority of the power generated on-site from solar panels and fuel cells, the company's chief financial officer, Peter Oppenheimer, said.

The data centre in Maiden, North Carolina, which supports Internet storage and Apple's service-hosting iCloud product, produces 167 million kilowatt-hours - the power equivalent of 17,600 homes for one year - from a 100-acre solar farm and fuel cell installations provided by Silicon Valley startup Bloom Energy.

They are the largest, non-utility power-generating facilities of their kind in the United States, Oppenheimer told Reuters.

"We switched over to these new energy sources in December," he said. "And we are committed to generating 60 percent of the electricity that the data center will use by making power on site. We are now achieving that goal."

Apple purchases the rest of the green power needed at the facility.

Apple and other technology companies - such as Amazon and Microsoft - that build and run computer server farms have come under criticism for their high consumption of electricity and other resources. These data centers cater to an explosion in Internet traffic, streaming content through mobile devices and hosting of services to corporations.

Apple has switched many of its corporate facilities to fully operate on green power, including those in Austin, Texas; Cork, Ireland; and Sacramento, California, Oppenheimer said.

The company is building another 20-megawatt solar farm at its Maiden facility with solar panels supplied by SunPower Corp .

Overall, Apple said it has increased the proportion of renewable energy used throughout the company to 75 percent. Eventually, the company aims to use only renewable energy at all its facilities around the world.

Sri Lanka claims victory ahead of crucial UN rights vote

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 17 Maret 2013 | 23.55

Colombo, Mar 16 (PTI) Sri Lanka has described the adoption of its periodic review of human rights at Geneva's UNHRC sessions without a division as a victory and an acknowledgment of its rights progress. "We can be happy that our report was unanimously accepted at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). This was despite many powerful countries speaking against it," Mahinda Samarasinghe, a minister and President Mahinda Rajapaksa's Human Rights envoy, said. Samarasinghe said that anyone taking an impartial view would note Sri Lanka's human rights progress made since the end to the conflict with the LTTE four years ago. The review came ahead of next week's crucial resolution to be moved by the US. The US adopted a similar resolution last year with India's support which bound Sri Lanka to make rapid progress on reconciliation with the Tamils. In a statement, the US Geneva mission regretted that Sri Lanka had rejected all UPR recommendations of member states that called upon Colombo to implement recommendations of its own reconciliation body, the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC). In a critical tone, the US said Sri Lanka was trying to reframe human rights commitments in line with their National Plan of Action, which "does not address the broad spectrum of recommendations put forward by the LLRC report". Samarasinghe yesterday said that the government had already made budgetary provisions needed to implement the national action plan of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) report. Syrian general, 20 soldiers defect - opposition

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A brigadier general and about 20 soldiers defected from the Syrian army in two separate incidents on Saturday, activists said, in another sign that the strength of President Bashar al-Assad's armed forces is diminishing.

Brigadier General Mohammed Khalouf appeared dressed in a camouflage military uniform in a video on Al Arabiya news channel and said he had planned his escape with the opposition movement for some time.

"It is not possible for anyone to accept any of the ideas of this regime unless they have achieved special interests," he said in the video.

There was no comment about the defection on Syrian state news outlets.

Defection of high-ranking military and political figures has slowed in past months.

But a study by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) published this week estimated that Assad's forces, thought to be more than 300,000-strong at the start of the uprising two years ago, were now at a much lower effective strength and were likely to diminish further.

The IISS said that perhaps 50,000 of the Syrian army's elite troops could be depended on for loyalty. Most of them were likely to be from Assad's minority Alawite sect, which has dominated the country for more than four decades.

Many deserters report that their units were held inside bases to prevent their escape.

Syria's civil war began as a popular street movement but has evolved into an increasingly sectarian conflict. The opposition has been mostly led by the Sunni Muslim population, with Alawites and other minorities mostly throwing their weight behind Assad.

In central Syria, around 20 soldiers fled their posts for embattled rebel territory near the ancient desert city of Palmyra, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The British-based group, which has a network of activists across Syria, said the soldiers fled to farmlands near the city, where there has been shelling and gun battles for two days.

Fighting has now spread across most of the country, except for a stronghold on the Mediterranean coast which is home to a large Alawite population.

With increasing violence has come a rising use of cluster munitions, the Human Rights Watch reported Saturday, saying it had identified at least 119 locations across Syria where the bombs had been used in the past six months. It said cluster bomb attacks were causing a mounting civilian death toll in a conflict that has already killed more than 70,000 people.

"Syria is expanding its relentless use of cluster munitions, a banned weapon, and civilians are paying the price with their lives and limbs," said Steve Goose of Human Rights Watch.

"The initial toll is only the beginning because cluster munitions often leave unexploded bomblets that kill and maim long afterward."

Vital clues obtained in fidayeen attack, says Shinde

Tirupati, Mar 16 (PTI) Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today said vital clues have been obtained on the recent 'fidayeen' attack in Srinagar in which five CRPF jawans were killed. "Security personnel have obtained vital clues on the attack and identified the people responsible for it and also those who helped them to carry it out," Shinde, who is in this temple town to offer worship to Lord Venkateswara, told reporters. Two terrorists, disguised as cricketers, had stormed a CRPF camp near a school at Bemina in Srinagar on March 13, killing five of its personnel in a major suicide attack in the city after a gap of three years in which the militants were suspected to be from Pakistan. On the February 21 Hyderabad twin blasts, Shinde said security personnel had secured vital clues but declined to elaborate. Referring to Congress President Sonia Gandhi completing 15 years, he said "in the next Lok Sabha elections, we are again going to come to power. Congress is flourishing under her leadership." Earlier Shinde, who arrived here, proceeded to Tiruchanur near here where he offered prayers to goddess Padmavathi. PTI COR BN MSR SHL

Modi parries questions on desire to become PM

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today parried questions on whether he wanted to become the Prime Minister, saying he had never even dreamt of becoming the Chief Minister.

"I have never dreamt of becomming someone in life. I have always tried to do something. Mostly people dream of becomming someone and die. I have never followed this.

"Till I had become Chief Minister, I had never dreamt of becomming so. I have never even met an astrologer to tell me that I will become a Chief Minister," Modi said in answer to a question on whether he wanted to become Prime Minister and instead said one should not dream to "be" but to "do".

"I feel if Gujarat model is good, it can be implemented in the country. I don't need to come there," he said at the India Today Conclave. He said all people want to do was learn from examples and achieve suiccess and it was necessary for him to come to Delhi as Gujarat's model of success can be replicated at the Centre.

When asked who in the BJP was stopping him from coming to Delhi, Modi gave a humorous touch to his reply. "I am sitting in Delhi. If someone had stopped me, how could I be sitting here." The three-time Gujarat Chief Minister, who is projected as BJP's Prime Ministerial face ahead of the next general elections, said people should be happy to note that the party runs in a democratic way where decisions are taken democratically by its Parliamentary Board and "not on the basis of one family", a veiled reference to the Nehru-Gandhi family.

As part of his plans for India's resurgence, Modi said removal of corruption and good governance were his mantras that could turn the nation around and said technology can help eradicate corruption. He also said stability of tenure is the success to good governance.

Modi, in his over half-an-hour speech, hit out at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his alleged inaction and for remaining silent and launched a veiled attack on Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for rolling up his sleeves to remind the people that his party was bringing in legislations to empower them. "The nation does not need Acts, it need action," he said.

Pakistan government ends unprecedented full term amid criticism

By Mubasher Bukhari and Mehreen Zahra-Malik

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's elected government will complete its full five-year term on Saturday, the first in the country's turbulent history to do so, with a legacy of Taliban violence, sectarian unrest, a fragile economy and chronic power cuts.

Parliament will be dissolved at midnight after completing its term, said the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, and a caretaker administration will manage the government until general elections within 90 days.

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf was expected to remain in office until the appointment of a caretaker prime minister, a process expected to take a few days.

Pakistani newspapers noted the historic nature of the changeover in a country known for political upheaval and long bouts of military rule, while attacking the outgoing government's record on the economy and security.

"For the first time in the history of this country, an elected government has completed its tenure in office; and to that extent it can be said that history has been made," said an editorial in The News.

"That truly unfortunately, is only the form. What will be the judgment of history when it studies the content? Will it not reveal it to be a woeful tale of failure -- the failure of our elected leaders to truly make history."

The government managed to stay in power despite frequent showdowns with Pakistan's powerful generals and an increasingly interventionist Supreme Court that pursued top officials.

The military, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half its 66-year history through coups or from behind the scenes, has long regarded the civilian rulers as corrupt and incompetent.

Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani, however, has vowed to keep the military out of politics.

The army, long regarded by Pakistanis as the country's most effective institution, lost face when U.S. special forces killed Osama bin Laden in a unilateral raid in the town of Abbottabad in 2011.

Critics of the government say it missed a valuable chance to capitalise on rare public criticism of the military after that operation to assert civilian rule and demonstrate it was serious about tackling the country's long list of problems.

Western allies have poured billions of dollars in aid into Pakistan, worried that growing public anger over corruption, poverty and energy shortages, may boost recruitment to Islamist militant groups threatening to destabilise Pakistan and beyond.

While the number of Taliban suicide bombings has dropped, the government has failed to contain sectarian violence.

Hardline Sunni groups led by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi have stepped up bombings and shootings of minority Shi'ites, killing hundreds since the start of this year.

The government may soon have to again turn to the International Monetary Fund to keep the economy afloat and avert a balance of payments crisis.

The Asian Development Bank, one of Pakistan's biggest lenders, estimates the government may need up to $9 billion from the IMF.

"There are a number of challenges that the outgoing government has left for the next elected dispensation to tackle," said an editorial in Dawn newspaper.

"Not least among them is security, the economy and a simmering Baluchistan," it added, referring to a province where Sunni militants have been stepping up attacks on Shi'ites.

The United States, a major aid donor despite strained ties with Pakistan in recent years, will be closely watching the elections in a country where the military shapes foreign policy with the help of the powerful intelligence agencies.

Looking ahead to elections, whose date has not been set yet, some Pakistanis said they were desperate for change and many were critical of the ruling centre-left Pakistan People's Party.

"We have tried them (the PPP) for five years. Is that not enough? Anyone who votes for them again will either be a fool, or will be doing so for selfish reasons," said grocery store owner Gul Mohammad.

"All those who care for this country will never vote for them again," he said.

Dams lost significance as they cater to big industries: Hazare

Chandrapur, Mar 16 (PTI) Dams have lost their significance for rural population as they mainly cater to big industries and pose a threat to environment, social activist Anna Hazare said today while stressing the need for conservation of environment. "Dams are of little use for rural population as they often cater to large industries, urban population and pose a serious threat to environment", Hazare said while delivering the inaugural address at the two-day workshop of Joint Forest Management (JFM) committees under Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Nagpur forest circles here. While hailing the concept of JFM as "revolutionary", Hazare said, "dams have a fixed life span and the amount of silt displaced by them is nothing but the fertile top-soil which takes at least 100 years for formation". JFM involves forging partnerships in forest management involving both the state forest departments and local communities. Hazare observed that initiatives undertaken by JFMs would help in realisation of Mahatma Gandhi's ideology of prosperity of villages which would in turn lead to prosperity of the country. He accused government of centralisation of power which he said tantamount to oligarchy. Stressing the need to protect environment, Hazare said, "the best way to conserve it is by planting trees and saving forests. JFMs, if practically implemented, would prove to be the key to success to tackle various environmental issues". Praveen Pardeshi, Chief Secretary (Forests), said that objective of JFMs was to spread awareness about various government policies among common people. "We also intend to create a better rapport between villagers and forest officials", he said. Hazare presented a cheque of Rs 55,000 to a JFM office bearer from Gilibili village as the share of revenue generated out of bamboo from the forest maintained by JFM. PTI Corr NSK SHL RYS

Rs 21 lakh withdrawn using counterfeit cheques

Kendrapara (Odisha), Mar 9 (PTI) Over Rs 21 lakh from the account of Bihar State Warehousing Corporation (BSWC) were found to have been withdrawn using two counterfeit cheques from a branch of State Bank of India here, police said today. The fraudsters withdrew Rs 21.32 lakh from the BSWC account using two counterfeit cheques. The matter came to light when the original cheques were submitted, they said. The cheques sent for clearance were strikingly similar to original ones, they said. The SBI Kendrapara branch had received two cheques issued by BSWC through SBI Mauryalok Complex branch in Patna, the branch's chief manager Prabin Kumar Mahapatra said. "Those were sent to us for clearance by local branches of Axis bank and Canara bank. The cheques were honoured as we did not find anything wrong in it," he said. "However, the fraud was detected after our Patna counterpart alerted us that the cheques were fake. By that time the money was withdrawn," Mahapatra said. The police suspect that the fraudsters are spread in places like Patna (Bihar), Malda (West Bengal), Nasik (Maharastra) and Ahmedabad (Gujurat). Cases have been registered under sections 420, 467, 468, 472 and 120 (b) of the Indian Penal Code, police said. Our preliminary findings reveal that the culprits are conduits of a countrywide racket of counterfeit bank cheques, they said. PTI COR AAM NN HKR

Tour de France director hails British role in the sport

By Julien Pretot

NICE, France (Reuters) - Britain's growing cycling culture has helped to globalise the sport while keeping it close to its European roots, Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme said.

"Globalisation is necessary but we need to respect the roots of cycling," Prudhomme told Reuters in an interview after the fifth stage of the Paris-Nice race.

"If cycling has been resistant to scandals it's because it has deep roots in some countries."

Globalisation could be achieved through the riders, not just by spreading races all over the world, he said.

"When (Australian) Cadel Evans wins the Tour, images travel all over the world. The Tour has helped globalise cycling through its champions."

Road cycling took the spotlight in Britain after the Tour started from London in 2007 and Bradley Wiggins's Tour triumph last year - 10 days before he also won the London Olympic time trial - had increased interest, Prudhomme said.

"When you see Bradley Wiggins win, he is the first Briton to win the Tour, he has an Australian father, and the rider who is second overall (Chris Froome) was born in Kenya and lives in South Africa - it epitomises Commonwealth," said Prudhomme on Friday.

"But yet you're still right next to Paris, to Belgium."

The English-speaking world, at one time regarded as a threat to cycling with the now-disgraced Lance Armstrong once being rumoured to take over as Tour de France owner, was now cycling's great ally, according to Prudhomme.

"When I went to Yorkshire (this year) to announce that the Tour 2014 would start from Yorkshire, I told them: 'You're Belgians who speak English'," he said.

"I'd also like to thank the people who decided to send Wiggins on to the stage with the yellow jersey on his back at the Olympic opening ceremony. We were so proud that day.

"When you have a Briton winning the Tour you're reaching out to everyone who speaks English in the world and that's a few potential fans."

Puducherry, Mar 2 (PTI) One more person has been arrested in connection with the planting of a bomb-like device in the unreserved compartment of the Puducherry-bound Dadar Chalukya express train here on January 8. The accused Sivasankaran hailing from Panaiyur in Tiruvannamalai district in neighbouring Tamil Nadu was arrested yesterday and remanded in judicial custody today, police said. One Shankar from Thuraiyur in Tiruchirapallai was arrested in connection with a cheating case a few days ago and during interrogation, he confessed that he had developed the bomb-like device in consultation with Sivasankaran by procuring detonators and gel type explosive capsules on the pretext of drilling work for a borewell, police said. Shankar also told Puducherry CID personnel, who arrested him, during interrogation that he planted the device in a suitcase which was abandoned in the compartment, police said. The bomb squad had defused the device which was found in a metallic container connected to a cell phone in the suitcase which also carried the slogan 'Mayan Calendar'. The materials had since been sent for examination in the Forensic science Lab in Hyderabad whose report is awaited, sources said. It was alleged that Shankar had made the device to settle scores with an astrologer of Thuraiyur who he suspected was responsible for his mother's illness. The two accused have been lodged in the central prison. PTI COR BN SHS BS

Modi was the flavour of the conclave with several leaders Modi was the flavour of the conclave with several leaders praising him. "He made a hat-trick. We were delighted to hear about his victory. We had never seen a BJP chief minister winning three consecutive terms. His development model has been lauded by all, even at the international forum. Be it the US or the European Union all have praised his good governance," Rajnath Singh said in his inaugural address. "It won't be proper to welcome Modi with mere words. He deserves a good round of applause, a standing ovation," the BJP president said. He garlanded Modi amid slogan shouting by enthusiastic party members. The party top brass, comprising of Central leaders as well as chief ministers seated on the dais, were on their feet and and clapped for Modi. Though Singh tried a balancing act towards the end of his speech by praising other chief ministers, Modi appeared to be the favourite with the crowd. The BJP president said he was confident that Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his Chhattisgarh counterpart Raman Singh will also win three consecutive elections when Assembly polls are held later this year in the two states. Singh also exhorted party leaders assembled at the National Council, which is meeting to chalk out its roadmap for the upcoming Assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Delhi and Jharkhand, as well as the general elections slated for 2014, to bury their differences and fight unitedly. The party has clarified that a decision on who should be made the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate will be taken at an appropriate time by the Parliamentary Board. Some of the top party leaders as well as allies like JD(U) are opposed to Modi being the Prime Ministerial candidate of the BJP and the NDA. PTI RC SKC PMS
